"Muy Bonito:" Experiencing Ecuador's Effortless Elegance

Image
When I left the country for the first time, it changed my life. I flew into Ecuador’s capital, Quito , on April 10, 2023, with my mom at my side. She had visited before; 18 years prior, before I came into her life. She was reminiscing about her time spent in Ecuador — the people, the landscape, the food, the experience — and wished to share that same experience with me. Quito currently has a population of over 2 million people and is the world’s second-highest administrative capital sitting at 9,350 feet. Here, the elevation plays its tricks on you. Quito is approximately 16 miles away from Cuidad Mitad del Mundo (or, Middle of the World City) where the altitude is, extraordinarily, 0 feet exactly. We’ll touch upon this monumental place in a moment, but first, our attention lies on Quito. 'Art' You Glad They're Here? A Look At LBCC's Art Club

Image
In South Santiam Hall, Room 211, six students meet to express their artistic creativity. Four of these students remain invested in their individual projects, while two of them ponder an upcoming school project with diligence.  These two students happen to be Art Club’s co-leaders at LBCC, Ryder LeBlanc and Mei Yung CwmCwlamare. The Art Club typically meets every Tuesday and Thursday. at 4:30 p.m., with hours subject to change. Currently, the club’s meeting times have been hectic because of the approaching Spring Festival — held on May 12 in the LBCC Courtyard from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — but will return to normal after the event.  The Art Club’s main focus recently has been making Alice in Wonderland-themed decorations with other clubs for the fest, as well as preparing their own booth. This will consist of face playing cards, cheshire cat stickers, and a large trellis.  Toward the end of April there stood a giant paper maché pencil in the room, courtesy of club member Jay Un...

"28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" is more than a sequel — it's a masterpiece

Image
How’s that? Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Alex Garland , " 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple " is the fourth installment of the movie series that seamlessly blends horror and humanity with an unexpected delicateness. The plot is a simple continuation of the " 28 Years " franchise, but where the film lacks in narrative, it makes up for in depth and ambiguity. At a runtime of 1 hour and 49 minutes, it is easy to miss all of the small details incorporated into each scene. Interestingly enough, Danny Boyle , who directed both the first installment, " 28 Days Later ," and the 2025 third installment " 28 Years Later ," passed his directorial torch to DaCosta. The crew filmed the two movies back-to-back in three months with rapid succession. Boyle filmed the first “28 Years” simultaneously while DaCosta worked on " The Bone Temple ," resulting in intersecting locations, cast, and production. “I inherited an amazing cast, then I was...

Logos: A Short Novel

A note to the reader: This was a part of my college project on creative writing fiction. This story contains themes of suicide, alcoholism, mental health, and dark elements. David Kenneth Abbasi, 34-years-old and 5-feet-eleven-inches, sits on the balcony overlooking the city. The wind is crisp with a puzzling undertone of ammonia. Neon flashes and flickers, casting a reddish-orange glow over the night sky. It’s cold, perhaps stale, but not uncomfortable. David has money, but you would never know it. He sits with his worn leather boots crossed and his saddlebag slung absentmindedly across the left shoulder. Both are scuffed with years of wear. He dons a flannel, most likely found in a free bin years ago, though he doesn’t remember this; he does not pay attention to the small details in life. David is a big picture guy. He can barely recall his seventh birthday — the one where his birthday clown inadvertently flirted with his aunt the entire afternoon — because it wasn’t a big pict...
